Descaling Delonghi

In order to enjoy your Delonghi coffee machine longer, it is important to frequently descale it. As such, you prevent limescale from ruining the heat-element. Go through steps below to clean your Delonghi Magnifica, Dinamica or a different model.

Step 1: Descaling agent

Turn on your Delonghi coffee machine and empty the water reservoir. Then pour 100 millilitres of descaling agent into the reservoir and add a litre of water. Place the reservoir back. Place a container below the steam nozzle of your coffee machine to collect the water. Ensure that this container can contain at least 1.5 litres of water. This will ensure it will not overflow.

Step 2: Descaling programme of your Delonghi coffee machine

To start the descaling programme, hold the descaling button, showing an arrow and droplets, for five seconds. Subsequently turn the steam lever open all the way, to allow the hot water to release. The descaling programme will last for about half an hour.

Step 3: Turning on the flushing programme

Fill the water reservoir again, this time with water only. Empty the tray that you used to collect the descaling agent and place it back. Turn on the flushing programme and allow the coffee machine to operate again. Water will flow through the Delonghi at intervals until the reservoir is empty. After cleaning, close the steam knob and the cleaning of your coffee machine is finished.

Protecting the Delonghi coffee machine against limescale

Limescale will shorten the lifespan of your Delonghi coffee machine, even when you descale it regularly. The lime will stick to the heating-element, ensuring that your coffee machine consumes more energy to heat the water. As a result, the heating-element will break down sooner.

Protect your Delonghi machine against the consequences of hard water, using a water softener. The Amfa4000® will cost only € 169 and is suitable for the entire home. This way, you will not only protect your coffee machine, but also your shower head, kettle, washing machine and iron against limescale. Read more about the consequences of hard water.

Frequently asked questions about descaling your Delonghi

When should I descale my Delonghi Magnifica?

In general, you will need to descale a Delonghi every three months. A coffee machine like the Delonghi Magnifica will automatically indicate this, you can’t get it any easier. Your coffee machine has a light that will flash when the device needs descaling. This way, you will be notified instantly when it is time to clean it.

Can lime end up in my coffee?

When limescale is created in your Delonghi coffee machine, it is possible that small lime particles end up in your coffee. You needn’t worry about this, because these particles are not harmful. What they can do is change the flavour of your coffee, because the lime pieces contain various minerals.

What does limescale do to the crema layer on my coffee ?

Crema is the full flavour gold-brown layer on the coffee. When there is a lot of limescale in your coffee machine, your coffee will get this crème layer, which will quickly dilute. This is the result of limescale reducing the pressure in the pipes.
