Descale the shower head
Shower head descaling
When lime blocks the holes of your shower head, the dispersion of water is impeded. Fortunately, you can easily solve this yourself by cleaning the shower head with vinegar.
Step 1: Disassembly
There is a connection between the hose and the shower head that can be unscrewed. This may be difficult when it contains a lot of lime. In that case you can use pliers, but do not apply too much force: as this could cause the connection to break. Are there little brown spots around the connection? Then first use an anti-rust agent. When there is an abundance of white lime on the connection, you can more easily unscrew the shower head by spraying a bit of WD-40 onto the connection.
Step 2: Soaking in vinegar
Fill the sink or a bucket with water and add vinegar. The optimal water-vinegar proportion is one part of water and two parts of vinegar. The shower head must be entirely immersed. Now all you have to do is wait for the next 24 hours.
Step 3: Rinsing the shower head
After a day of soaking, the lime will have dissolved. Now rinse the shower head with cold water and attach it back to the shower hose. Then briefly turn on the shower to rinse the last bits of vinegar and lime from the shower head.
Frequently asked questions about the descaling of a shower head
How do I descale a shower head that is fixed to the wall?
In some cases it is not possible to unscrew the shower head from the hose, for instance, when it is attached to the wall. Fortunately, then it is still possible to soak the shower head in vinegar. The only thing you will be needing in this case, is a plastic bag. Pour the vinegar-water mixture into the bag and tie it around the shower head.
How can I stop a shower head from clogging?
If you dry the shower head with a cloth after having taken a shower, less water will remain in the shower head. It is specifically this remaining water that causes scale. When you remove this each time after you have taken a shower, the holes of the shower head will not so easily get clogged.
Why is there lime in my shower head?
Since soil is rich in lime and minerals, it is also found in the pipe water. Depending on the type of soil in your area, the water in your home may be harder or softer.
